At Mindmaris Psychology Centre, we believe that meaningful psychological care begins with listening, understanding and respecting every individual's unique experiences. Malavika Kakkoth, our Consultant Psychologist, brings a thoughtful, empathetic and client-centred approach to working with adolescents and adults experiencing emotional, behavioural and psychological difficulties.
She holds an M.Sc. in Psychology from Bengaluru City University, where she graduated with First Class Exemplary, and a B.Sc. in Psychology from LISSAH College, Calicut, graduating with First Class with Distinction. She has also qualified the UGC-NET in Psychology, making her eligible for PhD admission.
Her clinical experience includes working with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, emotional dysregulation, grief, adjustment-related concerns and behavioural difficulties. Having conducted more than 150 counselling sessions with over 25 clients, she has developed an appreciation for the importance of understanding each person's circumstances, emotional experiences and individual strengths before determining an appropriate therapeutic direction.
Areas of Professional Practice
Malavika works with adolescents and adults, offering psychological counselling and support for a range of emotional and mental health concerns. Her areas of professional interest include anxiety management, depression, emotional regulation, relationship difficulties, grief, adjustment concerns and behavioural issues.
She recognises that psychological difficulties do not exist in isolation and that personal experiences, relationships, environmental influences and individual thought patterns can all contribute to emotional distress. Therefore, she places importance on understanding the broader context of each client's concerns rather than approaching difficulties from a purely symptom-focused perspective.
Her professional practice also involves case history taking, mental status examination (MSE), psychoeducation and confidential clinical documentation. These responsibilities contribute to a structured understanding of clients' psychological needs and help guide appropriate therapeutic interventions.
Therapeutic Approaches and Interventions
Her therapeutic practice incorporates CBT-informed interventions and other practical psychological strategies, adapted to suit the needs and goals of individual clients.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): She draws upon CBT principles to help individuals understand the relationship between their thoughts, emotions and behaviours. Through identifying unhelpful thinking patterns and exploring alternative perspectives, she supports clients in developing healthier ways of responding to everyday challenges.
Behavioural Activation: She incorporates behavioural activation strategies to help individuals gradually reconnect with meaningful activities, establish healthier routines and overcome patterns of withdrawal or inactivity that may accompany emotional difficulties, particularly depression.
Psychoeducation: She considers psychoeducation an important part of the counselling process, helping clients understand their emotional experiences, psychological concerns and behavioural patterns. This awareness can empower individuals to participate more actively in their own therapeutic journey.
Relaxation Techniques: She uses appropriate relaxation techniques to help individuals manage stress, reduce emotional and physical tension and develop practical coping strategies.
Emotion Regulation Strategies: She also focuses on helping clients recognise, understand and manage their emotional responses. Through appropriate emotion regulation strategies, individuals can develop greater emotional awareness and respond more effectively to challenging situations.
Professional Experience and Clinical Exposure
As a Consultant Psychologist at Mindmaris Psychology Centre, Ernakulam, Malavika works with adolescents and adults presenting with diverse psychological concerns. Her responsibilities include conducting counselling sessions, understanding individual case histories, identifying presenting concerns and strengths, and adapting therapeutic interventions according to each client's needs.
Her professional development has also been shaped by internship experiences at IQRAA-Thanal Centre for Psychiatric Care and Softmind. These experiences have contributed to her understanding of psychological care across different settings and strengthened her exposure to clinical assessment, counselling practices and mental health support.
Through her clinical responsibilities and continued professional learning, she strives to strengthen her understanding of psychological difficulties and develop practical approaches that support meaningful therapeutic outcomes.
A Compassionate and Collaborative Approach
One of the defining aspects of Malavika's approach is her belief that individuals should feel comfortable being themselves within the therapeutic space. She understands that opening up about personal struggles is not always easy, and that trust, patience and acceptance are essential in building a meaningful therapeutic relationship.
Rather than imposing expectations or rushing the therapeutic process, she encourages clients to explore their experiences at a pace that feels manageable. She values collaborative therapy, where clients are actively involved in understanding their concerns, identifying personal strengths and working towards realistic therapeutic goals.
Her approach focuses not only on addressing immediate psychological difficulties but also on helping individuals develop greater self-awareness, emotional resilience and confidence in managing everyday life.
Her Vision of Psychological Well-being
Malavika believes that mental health deserves the same openness, attention and understanding as physical health. She recognises the importance of creating a society where individuals feel comfortable seeking psychological support without fear of judgement or stigma.
At Mindmaris Psychology Centre, we appreciate her thoughtful approach, commitment to continuous learning and genuine interest in supporting individuals through their emotional and psychological challenges.
We believe that every individual has the potential to understand themselves better, develop healthier coping mechanisms and build a more fulfilling life. Through her empathetic and collaborative approach, Malavika strives to make that journey more approachable, supportive and meaningful.
