How to recognise emotional intelligence?
Ever wondered why some people react to the same situation differently...? Some may just smile but others may laugh aloud for the same exam results.. some may show a sad expression but others may cry aloud at a public space when someone robs them.. This can be because of different level of emotional intelligence different people have... ! Recognising emotional intelligence can be really easy as observing one's reaction to an external event/situation.. Daniel Goleman defines emotional intelligence (EI) as the ability to recognize, understand, and manage one's own emotions and the emotions of others, enabling effective interaction and goal achievement.
Developing Emotional Intelligence
1. Self-Awareness – The ability to accurately recognize one’s own emotions and their effect on thoughts and behavior.
2. Self-Regulation – Managing and controlling emotional responses, reducing impulsive reactions, and adapting to situations.
3. Motivation – Using emotions positively to stay focused, set goals, and maintain persistence.
4. Empathy – Understanding and sharing the emotions of others, which supports compassion and better social interaction.
5. Social Skills – Building healthy relationships through effective communication, conflict management, cooperation, and leadership.
How to Develop It:
- Practice mindfulness to increase self-awareness.
- Use relaxation techniques (like deep breathing) to regulate emotions.
- Set meaningful goals to build intrinsic motivation.
- Engage in active listening to strengthen empathy.
- Improve teamwork and communication to enhance social skills.
